Primary and Secondary Schools
At City Smart, we work closely with parents and students to find the right-fit school – whether it’s a local day school or a prestigious boarding institution. From English preparation to the application process and student support, we’re here every step of the way to ensure your child’s educational journey in Australia is smooth, supported, and successful.
Studying in Australian Primary & Secondary Schools
Australia offers a world-class education system that nurtures academic excellence, creativity, and personal growth from a young age. With diverse learning environments, supportive school communities, and a strong emphasis on holistic development, Australian primary and secondary schools are a top choice for international families seeking a well-rounded and globally recognised education for their children.
Australia follows a 12-year school system: primary school from Year 1 to 6, and secondary school from Year 7 to 12. At the end of Year 12, students sit a public exam and receive a recognised high school certificate used for university entry. Alternatively, international students can start Foundation program as their university entry pathway when they complete Year 11.
This flexible system makes Australian education both accessible and supportive for international students with diverse academic backgrounds and goals.

Schools We Work with across Australia
At City Smart, we have established relationships with a wide range of reputable primary and secondary schools across Australia. Whether you're looking for a top-ranking boarding school in Brisbane, a private day school in Sydney, or a specialist school in regional Victoria, we can help you find the right fit.
Thanks to our extensive network, we are able to connect students with schools across all states and territories. Below is a sample of the schools our students have applied to — or schools we can readily work with to facilitate your application.
We’re always happy to explore new school options based on your preferences — and can contact with schools not yet listed here.
01
Understand
Your Interests
We get to know your child and family — goals, learning style, personality, and any special needs — so we can recommend schools that fit academically, socially, and emotionally.

02
School Selection
& Planning
Based on your preferences (e.g. city, curriculum, co-ed vs single sex, academic focus), we help you shortlist suitable schools and prepare a clear application timeline.

03
Academic &
English Assessment
Most schools require recent school reports. If English is not the student's first language, an English assessment (e.g. AEAS test) may be required — we’ll guide you through that.

04
Prepare Application Documents
We assist with gathering all required documents — including school transcripts, birth certificate, passport, AEAS results (if applicable), and personal statements if required.

05
Offer &
Acceptance
Once your child receives a Letter of Offer, we help you review conditions, pay the deposit, and secure the place.

06
Student Visa
Applications
We assist with the Student Visa and, if required, Student Guardian Visa. Some schools may also arrange homestay or guardianship support.

07
Pre-departure &
Ongoing Support
We provide guidance on uniforms, booklists, accommodation, airport pickup, and orientation. Once your child starts school, we remain in touch and offer support anytime.

Our offices in Hong Kong and Brisbane are here to support you before, during, and after your journey — whenever you need us.

Application Process

Preparation Programs for
Primary & Secondary Studies
For international students planning to enter an Australian school, preparation is key. City Smart offers tailored course options to help students build the academic skills, confidence, and English proficiency they need to thrive in a new school environment.
English Preparation Course (ELICOS)
Designed for students whose first language is not English, these intensive language programs focus on developing reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. They also introduce students to classroom language, subject-specific vocabulary, and Australian school culture.
-
Suitable for: Students of all ages needing to meet English requirements
-
Duration: Typically 10–40 weeks, depending on current English level
-
Delivered by: Language centres, some high schools, and partner colleges
Primary Preparation Programs
These programs are designed to help younger students (typically ages 6–12) adapt to Australian primary school standards. Courses focus on English language, core subjects, classroom behaviour, and soft skills like teamwork and communication.
-
Suitable for: Students entering Year 1 to 6
-
Delivered by: Specialised centres and select schools
-
Goal: Build confidence and smooth transition into Year 1–6
High School Preparation Programs
High school prep programs help students (usually Year 7–10 entrants) prepare for the academic demands of Australian secondary education. These courses emphasise English for academic purposes, subject preparation (e.g. maths, science), and student wellbeing.
-
Suitable for: Students entering Year 7 to 10
-
Includes: AEAS test prep, time management skills, cultural orientation
-
Often a pathway to direct school enrolment
At City Smart, we’ll help you understand each option and recommend the most suitable arrangement based on your child’s needs and your family’s preferences.

Guardianship & Living Arrangements
International students under 18 must have approved accommodation and welfare arrangements while studying in Australia. There are three main options available, and each provides a different level of support depending on your child’s age, independence, and family preferences:
-
Boarding at School
Many independent and private schools offer on-campus boarding facilities. Boarding schools provide a structured environment with round-the-clock care, academic support, and a strong sense of community. This is a popular option for younger students or families who prefer close supervision.
-
Homestay Arrangement
Homestay involves living with a local Australian family approved by the school. It allows students to experience Australian culture firsthand in a safe and caring environment. Homestays are carefully matched and monitored, and are ideal for students who seek more independence while still receiving family-style support.
-
Student Guardian Visa (Subclass 590)
A parent or close relative can apply for a Student Guardian Visa to accompany the child during their studies in Australia. This is often preferred by families with younger children or parents who wish to support their child personally during the initial transition to a new country.
At City Smart, we’ll help you understand each option and recommend the most suitable arrangement based on your child’s needs and your family’s preferences.
